I have been traveling at a break neck pace in the last few months… thus the serious lack of blog posting. Nearly every weekend took me to a new region in Canada. It was interesting to take in most of Canada in one big gulp. Here is a list of thoughts and impressions I had along the way:

- some Northern Ontarians would like to separate from Southern Ontario. I had no idea. After hearing the separation stories/manifesto (about 4 and half hours worth in van ride to Dryden) I can see their point.

- South Eastern Ontarians were the among the most "get down to business types" yet the hardest to keep on a time schedule. They really had a lot of fun chatting on the breaks.

- Everyone in Saskatchewan is a nice person and fiercely committed to meeting (some people drove over 12 hours to get there).

- Our church in Ellice Alberta may be among the most remote in the union, but it plays a central role in the lives of the people in that community. I found myself frequently impressed by what I saw and heard.

- South Central Ontario was the first gathering. Our (Keith and I) nerves were on edge. The arrangements were the most complex. The crowd was the most diverse. When it was all over we discovered that… everyone had had a good time.

- North Central Ontario had a really strong sense of regional mission and family. I think the Val Caron church is one of the funnest places I have preached at thus far.

- Southern Ontario was held on the nicest Saturday of all the meetings. How people kept their concentration and stayed inside for that long I'll never know. I think everyone there deserved a metal.

- BC was the perfect book end to the tour. Great people, great food, great location, and ever greater times. When it was all over Vern Frudd took me on a romantic drive through the mountains.

Well I am at about the middle point of our Regional Gatherings.  The Regional Gatherings are designed to help foster more regional connections, awareness, and we hope regional projects all over the FM movement in Canada.  Things have been going great.  Each event brings with it a new sense that FMers are looking for chances to work with each other.  There has been a good sense of prayerfulness, a willingness to work together, and some real signs of generosity!  I think this is going to go miles in helping support the more vulnerable members of our movement:  the church plants, ethnic churches, and churches that are in decline.

A documentary project I am a small part of is getting set to shoot it's first footage. The goal of project is take snapshot of what God is doing in new kinds of church expression in Canada. Joe Manafo and Jeremy Duncan are getting ready to head out on the first adventure.

The dates have finally been set for the first road trip that includes three stops in Alberta & potentially six stops in BC. Jeremy and I will hit the road from June 3 - June 11 to capture to film the first stories of new forms of church in Canada.

What I mean is, when we first began it was much easier to remain organic, non-hierarchical, Kingdom-focused, big on community, and natural. But it becomes increasingly difficult the longer we’ve been around, the more people we gain, and the more projects we undertake.

What worried me in particular was that we might well, in certain arms of the Church, be selling people a fantasy cycle. Inviting them on this great ride - it’s fantastic, it’s new, it’s perfect! And they are just ripe for it, and its starts like a dream and they are up and clapping, on fire… And then gradually get frustrated.

They have to sing harder, or be in bigger groups to get the same worship hit. Things don’t make quite as much sense. The people are awkward buggers. And the illness has come back… And the real worry, as Alan has brilliantly written in his book A Churchless Faith, is that once the Death Wish phase is entered, people simply leave.

In another article in this series he offers these great suggestions.

1. Keep it real. Keep the dirt on show, and avoid temptations to project an image of things as better than they actually are.

2. Keep the feedback loops functioning. If communication is good, people are less likely to be able to project false images, or believe them.

3. This probably means that structures will need to remain flat and open. In my experience, the more hierarchical you get, the more likely it is a protective fantasy image will be projected onto the leadership, and from them to the wider circle.

4. Accept the death of the temporal when it comes. The Church will never die. But churches will. And we need to help them have good deaths when they do.

As part of becoming a learning community in the Free Methodist Church in Canada, we have laid out a few key books that we feel are important for us to be reading right now. These books were agreed upon by the Network leaders in January.

One of the books that narrowly missed the list but is still worth a read is called "The Forgotten Ways" by Alan Hirsch . He has posted a downloadable copy of the first chapter of his book here on his website. The relationship between Church Planters and Denominational Church Planting guys (like me) can often be weird.  

Church Planters, being the visionary entrepreneurs types, need freedom.  They need to feel unconstrained as they do their job.  After all church planting is all about innovating, improvising and riffing on what the church can be.  This job ain’t easy.

Denominational guys, being burned-out lifeless human shells who cling feebly to bureaucracy, need numbers. We have to count things.  We have to categorize things.  We have to file things.  Counting, categorizing, and filing are a necessary evil for us.  They create the one thing we need:  "compression".  We have to do high levels of compression on a lot of very divergent streams of information and data just so we can ask a basic question like: “How are things going with us?”.  Asking that question immediately turns you all Barnaesque and Bibby like.  You have to use sociology and statistics.

A lot of misunderstanding results when you need freedom and less hoops and we need reports and for you to count things. 

What we need to start doing is begin our relationship by asking each other these three very good questions from Lou Holtz (legendary football coach):

1. Do you care about me?
2. Can I trust you?
3. Are you committed to the success of the team?

Maybe there would be a lot more grace between us and our divergent needs if we both knew these answers from the get go.

Before I left Next Church Al Doseger and I sat down and tried to come up with a way that we could help people in our church come up with ideas and projects that fit with the unique calling Next Church had.  Al and I always had a hard time articulating why we thought a particular idea sucked.  Our opinions went well beyond personal taste to the root of why Next did what it did.  Things would sometimes get unintentionally personal when we had to say no… or worse… we would just simply abandon the idea to it’s doomed fate. 

So, we created this silly test to help us have meaningful conversations with people about their ideas.  We called it the "Jason Seabass Effectiveness Test" or "JSET" for short.  I only got to field test it a couple of times, but Al used it a lot more.  He said it was one of the best things we ever did.

Well I have been working on getting an installation of Drupal functioning, uploading all kinds of information, and just learning how to use it.  We are now official live and on the air.  Not much about this blog is going to change save the fact that I am going to be updating now more often I have the last month and half.

Sunday morning of January 14 was a special and unforgettable day for the Christians who live in Gatineau, especially the Free Methodists. Helen and I got there about a quarter to nine to find that Pastor Isaac and his people were ready to receive the guests who came from various places of Quebec and Ontario. Eglise Source d’Eau Vive in Sherbrooke was highly represented (19 people) and they had spent an overnight there. Many people from Quebec city, Ottawa, Hull and Gatineau itself and from different denominations had come. Ken Roth and his delegation of three people plus Alison Johnson had also come. Some Quebecers had also come whether to offer some flowers to Isaac or simply to see what was going on.

At 10:00 AM the Sunday service started in a solemn way and gradually people continue to arrive until all the seated places provided (108) were full. The program was strictly followed up so that about 12:30 PM the Sunday church service was over so as to leave the place to entertainment.

In his speech relating how the church has started, Pastor Isaac spoke about many good things but I retained two main things. He said, "I praise my God who took me from the Roman Catholic Church and who helped embrace the evangelical faith. My goal is to preach the Word,  to keep the Word and to live the Word in following Christ’s example." When he shared his vision for the church, he said: "The Lord told me that in 10 years, the church will count hundreds of people from all the cultural backgrounds of Gatineau and around. But God did not tell me the exact number," he continued.

Now the church is less than 6 months old and it counts an average of 35 people every Sunday morning service and it has got all the necessary gifts that every healthy church needs to grow. E.g.: worship team, musical instruments players, church choir, etc. I myself brought the message, read Bishop’s letter to the church of Gatineau and officially declared the church open.  Some of the guests from Gatineau and around expressed their desire to join the FMC La Lumière. My prayer is that the Lord will draw many people in that church and cause them to get saved. Attached are some pictures of Gatineau church ceremonies.

My wife over at Edeva has announced the Army of 100 over at edeva.ca.  The project is for 100 women to raise $104 each over a year.  Together they hope to build a permanent home for a fair-trade women’s co-op in the Dominican Republic.  Head on over to join the army.
